Brass Adapters – Connecting Different Thread Types
Brass adapters are the most frequently used fittings in plumbing systems. They allow transition between different thread standards (male to female, NPT to BSP) or between pipe materials. Male adapters have external threads and screw into female ports on valves, pumps, or equipment. Female adapters have internal threads and receive male-threaded pipes or nipples. Reducing adapters join pipes of different diameters. Adapters are essential for connecting brass to copper, PEX, or PVC systems. For potable water, choose brass with low lead content (≤0.25% weighted average).
Brass Elbows – Changing Direction Without Pressure Drop
Elbows redirect flow at angles of 90°, 45°, or 22.5°. A 90° elbow creates moderate pressure drop due to turbulence; a 45° elbow is smoother and preferred for high-flow systems. Street elbows (one male end, one female end) save space in tight installations. For hot water recirculation lines, use brass elbows with full-port (no internal restriction) to maintain flow rates. Elbows are available in sweat (solder) connections for copper pipe, threaded ends for iron pipe, or push-fit for quick installation. Always match the elbow's pressure rating to system requirements (typically 150 psi for standard brass).

Brass Tees and Wyes – Branching Flow Paths
Tees split or combine flow at 90-degree branch connections. Equal tees have all three ports the same size; reducing tees have a smaller branch outlet. For drainage applications, wyes (45-degree branches) are preferred over tees because they reduce clogging and maintain flow velocity. Threaded brass tees are common in air compressor lines, irrigation manifolds, and hydronic heating systems. When installing a tee, orient the branch perpendicular to the main flow direction. For systems with sediment, install the tee with the branch pointing upward to allow debris to settle in the main line.
Brass Caps and Plugs – Sealing Pipe Ends
Caps cover the end of a female pipe or fitting, while plugs seal a male threaded opening. Both are used for temporary system shutoffs, future expansion points, or permanent termination of unused ports. Caps are available in solder (for copper pipe), threaded, or push-fit versions. Plugs typically have hex heads for wrench tightening. For gas lines, always use brass caps specifically rated for gas (marked "Gas" or with yellow color band). For water systems under continuous pressure, apply PTFE tape and tighten hand-tight plus ¼ turn. Inspect annually for thread corrosion.
Brass Unions – Easy Disassembly for Maintenance
Unions consist of three pieces: two end connections (male and female) and a central nut that draws them together. They allow pipe sections to be disconnected without cutting, essential for servicing pumps, valves, or heat exchangers. Ground joint unions have precision-mated brass surfaces that seal metal-to-metal without gaskets; dielectric unions incorporate a plastic insulator to prevent galvanic corrosion when joining dissimilar metals (brass to steel). For hot water systems, use unions with Teflon-coated threads to prevent seizing. Tighten union nuts hand-tight plus ½ turn – over-tightening cracks the brass.
Brass Nipples and Bushings – Short Connectors
Nipples are short lengths of brass pipe with male threads on both ends, available in close (very short) or shoulder (longer) patterns. They extend pipe runs or connect two female fittings. Bushings reduce the size of a female fitting from larger to smaller threads, inserted internally. Hex bushings have external hex for wrenching; flush bushings sit inside the fitting. For compressed air or gas, use schedule 80 brass nipples (thicker wall) for higher pressure rating. Avoid brass bushings in high-vibration applications – the threaded connection can loosen over time.
Summary
Brass fittings include adapters (thread transitions), elbows (directional changes), tees (branching), caps/plugs (sealing), unions (disconnectable joints), and nipples/bushings (short connectors). Each type serves specific plumbing, air, or gas applications. Match thread standard (NPT/BSP), pressure rating (150-300 psi typical), and lead content (low-lead for potable water). Proper selection prevents leaks and extends system life.
