Storage Conditions – Avoid UV and Heat

HDPE fittings degrade under prolonged direct sunlight. Store them indoors or under opaque UV-blocking covers. For outdoor storage exceeding 30 days, use heavy-duty tarpaulins – never clear plastic sheeting which transmits UV.Do not store near heat sources above 40°C, as polyethylene may deform. Stack height should not exceed 1.5 meters (5 feet); higher stacks crush lower fittings, especially in warm weather.

Protection from Contamination

Keep fittings clean and dry. Dust, oil, grease, and moisture are the enemy of fusion welding – they prevent molecular bonding. Store small fittings in sealed plastic bags or covered bins. If a fitting falls into mud or standing water, do not attempt to clean and reuse it for pressure applications (especially gas or potable water). For non-critical use, thorough cleaning with isopropyl alcohol may be acceptable, but discard if any doubt.

Transportation Loading

During transport, secure fittings to prevent movement and impact damage. Use divided containers, pallet wrapping, or strapping – but not so tight that it deforms cartons. Never transport heavy metal items (valves, flanges, tools) on top of HDPE fitting boxes. The point loading cracks sockets and bodies. For mixed loads, place HDPE fittings on top or use rigid dividers. Inspect shipments immediately upon receipt for crush damage.

Pre-Installation Inspection

Before using any fitting, inspect it thoroughly. Check socket roundness by inserting the matching pipe end by hand – it should enter smoothly without binding or excessive play. Examine the inside of sockets for scratches, debris, or melted particles. For electrofusion fittings, inspect the copper coil wires – they must be intact and not corroded. Verify that markings (ISO 4427, DN, SDR, PE grade) are legible and match your pipe.

Cold Weather Handling

Below 5°C (41°F), HDPE becomes brittle. Impacts that would cause no damage at room temperature may crack fittings. Warm them to at least 10°C before handling or welding. Do not use open flames or high-temperature heat guns – use a warm vehicle or low-temperature cabinet (maximum 40°C). For electrofusion in cold weather, some welding machines have ambient temperature compensation; otherwise, consult manufacturer for extended heating times.

Reject Criteria

Fittings must be rejected if: any crack or split is visible, the socket is ovalized more than 1% of diameter, the marking is illegible or missing, the PE grade or SDR does not match the pipe, or there is any sign of contamination that cannot be cleaned. For gas or potable water, be especially strict. Using a damaged fitting is false economy – the cost of a leak far exceeds the cost of replacement.

Summary

Store HDPE fittings indoors or under opaque covers, below 40°C, stack under 1.5m. Keep clean and dry. Inspect for ovality, debris, and coil integrity (electrofusion). Cold weather requires warming to 10°C. Reject any fitting with cracks, mismatched markings, or contamination. Proper storage and inspection prevent field failures.
