Corrosion Resistance Comparison

Brass PPR fittings (typically CW617N) are adequate for normal municipal water with pH 6.5-8.5. However, in soft water (low mineral content, pH <6.5), aggressive well water, or water with high chlorine or chloramine, brass undergoes dezincification-zinc leaches out, leaving a weak, spongy copper structure that cracks. Stainless steel (SUS304 or SUS316) does not dezincify. SUS316 also resists pitting corrosion from chlorides. For applications with aggressive water chemistry, stainless steel is the safer long-term choice.

Strength and Pressure Handling

Brass has higher tensile strength (approx. 330 MPa) than annealed stainless steel (approx. 200-250 MPa for SUS304). However, the weak point is not the metal but the PPR socket, which is identical on both fitting types. Stainless steel is more ductile and less likely to crack under stress from over-tightening. For high-pressure systems (PN20-PN25), both materials perform equally well because the pressure rating is determined by the PPR socket, not the metal.

Temperature Performance

Both brass and stainless steel handle PPR's maximum 95°C intermittent temperature without degradation. However, brass has higher thermal expansion than stainless steel. When hot water flows, a brass insert expands more than the surrounding PPR socket, potentially loosening the embedment over many thermal cycles. Stainless steel's expansion coefficient is closer to PPR, reducing this risk. For continuous hot water circulation (e.g., solar heating, boiler feed), stainless steel provides better long-term embedment stability.

Cost Difference and Return on Investment

Stainless steel PPR fittings cost approximately 40-60% more than brass equivalents. For a standard residential project with normal water chemistry, the extra cost is rarely justified. However, for commercial buildings, industrial plants, or homes with aggressive well water (pH <6.5, high CO2), the cost of replacing failed brass fittings (including labor, water damage, and downtime) far exceeds the initial stainless steel premium. Use stainless steel where water testing indicates dezincification risk.

Weight and Handling Differences

Stainless steel fittings are slightly lighter than brass (density: stainless ~7.9 g/cm³, brass ~8.4 g/cm³). The difference is minimal for small diameters (<50mm). For large-diameter threaded adapters, stainless steel may feel less dense. However, the handling advantage is negligible. The real benefit is installers don't need to worry about "brass fatigue" from over-torquing-stainless steel is more forgiving.

Application-Specific Recommendations

Choose brass PPR fittings for: normal municipal water with pH 7-8, low-chlorine (<2ppm), low-CO2, and for budget-conscious residential projects. Choose stainless steel PPR fittings for: well water with pH <6.5, high CO2 (carbonic acid), seawater or brackish water, industrial chemical lines, high-chlorine treated water (>4ppm), and hot water recirculation systems with frequent thermal cycling. For gas lines, brass is generally preferred due to cost; stainless steel is not required.

Summary

Stainless steel resists dezincification and pitting corrosion, making it essential for aggressive water (low pH, high chlorine, seawater). Brass is cheaper but fails in corrosive conditions. Stainless steel has better thermal expansion match with PPR. Cost difference: 40-60% premium. Use stainless steel for aggressive water, recirculating hot water, or industrial applications; use brass for normal municipal water.
