Step 1 – Preparing the PPR Pipe End
Before any fusion, cut the PPR pipe squarely using a ratcheting pipe cutter. Use a deburring tool to remove all burrs and filings-burrs left inside the pipe will break off and clog fixtures or damage valves. Measure the socket depth of the stainless steel PPR fitting. Mark the insertion depth on the pipe with a permanent marker. Clean the pipe end and fitting socket with isopropyl alcohol (90%+) and a lint-free cloth. Do not touch the cleaned surfaces with bare fingers.
Step 2 – Fusion Welding the PPR Side
Set your PPR welding tool to 260°C. When the indicator light shows ready, insert the pipe into the heating sleeve and the fitting onto the heating mandrel simultaneously. The heating time depends on pipe diameter: 20mm → 5 seconds, 25mm → 7 seconds, 32mm → 8 seconds, 40mm → 12 seconds, 50mm → 18 seconds, 63mm → 24 seconds. After heating, remove both parts and push the pipe straight into the fitting in one smooth motion (no twisting). Hold for 10 seconds.

Step 3 – Cooling the Fusion Joint
Allow the fused joint to cool undisturbed. Cooling times: 20mm → 2 minutes, 25-32mm → 4 minutes, 40-50mm → 6 minutes, 63mm → 8 minutes. Do not move the pipe, apply load, or attempt to tighten the metal threads during cooling. Premature movement weakens the fusion bond. After cooling, inspect the joint: a uniform melt bead should be visible around the fitting mouth. If the bead is uneven or missing sections, cut out and redo.
Step 4 – Thread Preparation and Sealing
On the stainless steel thread side, wrap PTFE tape (Teflon tape) clockwise around the male threads-typically 5-7 wraps for 1/2" to 1", 8-10 wraps for larger sizes. Do not use pipe dope (liquid sealant) on stainless steel threads unless specified for stainless, as some compounds cause galling. For female threads (e.g., on a stainless steel PPR female adapter), apply PTFE tape to the male pipe threads you are connecting into the fitting, not inside the fitting.
Step 5 – Tightening the Threaded Connection
Hand-tighten the stainless steel fitting onto the mating metal valve, heater, or pipe. Then tighten an additional 1/4 to 1/2 turn using a wrench on the stainless steel hexagon (not on the PPR body). Never use the PPR body as a lever – it will crack. Do not over-tighten. Stainless steel threads are prone to galling (cold welding) if over-torqued. If you feel rough resistance during tightening, stop and disassemble; reapply PTFE tape and try again.
Step 6 – Pressure Testing After Installation
After completing all connections, conduct a hydrostatic pressure test at 1.5x the working pressure for at least 30 minutes. Inspect both the PPR fusion joints (look for weeping) and the stainless steel threaded joints (look for drips). A small amount of water on the thread surface may indicate insufficient PTFE tape. For potable water systems, test with clean water; for industrial systems, test with the intended fluid if safe.
Summary
Install stainless steel PPR fittings by fusing the PPR socket at 260°C using standard heating times, cooling completely, then sealing threads with PTFE tape (5-10 wraps). Hand-tighten plus 1/4 turn using wrench on metal hex only. Never over-torque or use PPR body as lever. Hydrostatic test at 1.5x working pressure. Inspect fusion bead for uniformity.
