Building fire protection problems of pvc pipes and fittings

May 31, 2022

China's research on PVC plastic flame retardant technology generally has a little tendency, one-sided pursuit of the improvement of oxygen index, ignoring the research on smoke performance. Statistics show that 79% of fires are caused by smoke. Some UPVC pipes have an oxygen index of more than 50%, but they emit a lot of smoke when burning, and the Vicat temperature is only between 70 °C and 90 °C. Therefore, although UPVC pipes are incombustible, they are easily softened and deformed, and the smoke smell is very strong. In a fire, on the one hand, deadly smoke is generated. A drain or vent pipe running through the roof with higher wind speeds will spread the fire faster. Therefore, whether UPVC pipes can be used in high-rise buildings has been a matter of debate, and the focus of the debate is its fire resistance.

UPVC pipes have been widely used in high-rise buildings, but not enough attention has been paid to the above fire protection issues, and no opinions have been given on the installation of UPVC pipes in the special acceptance of fire protection. Because the current "Code for Design of Building Fire Protection" GB 50016-2014, "Rigid PVC Pipe for Building Drainage" GB/T5836. Clear regulations on how to use UPVC pipes make this issue "unruly". While calling for the promulgation of relevant national documents and regulations, some opinions are put forward for colleagues' reference: (1) Rain, sewage and ventilation risers should be installed along the outer wall of the building as much as possible. (2) When the rain, sewage and ventilation risers are in the building, they should be installed in the pipeline well, or protected by non-combustible materials such as bricks and concrete blocks. (3) For the branch pipes discharged into the drainage riser, use metal drainage pipes, or take strict fire prevention measures for the branch pipes, such as steel casings, inorganic fireproof casings, etc. (4) The fittings for drainage should also be made of metal products as much as possible.

also. In the use of UPVC drainage pipes, there are still problems such as energy dissipation of risers, noise reduction and prevention of condensation, all of which limit the promotion and use of existing UPVC drainage pipes to a certain extent.
