PPR Pipes: DIY Tips to Avoid Leaks and Save Headaches

Jun 18, 2025

Laying PPR pipes isn't rocket science, but if you mess up the details, you'll regret it when leaks happen!

Plan Smart

Remember "hot on the left, cold on the right" for hot and cold water pipes. Keep them at least 15cm apart, and install hot water pipes higher or to the left to avoid interference.IFAN factory 30+ years manufacture experience support color /size customization support free sample.Welcome to consult for catalog and free samples. This is our Facebook Website:www.facebook.com.

Avoid unnecessary bends-straight pipes are best. If you must bend, use 45-degree elbows instead of 90-degree ones to reduce water pressure loss.

Leave accessible openings near water heaters or sinks for future repairs.

Don't Fumble the Heat Fusion

Set the heat fusion machine to around 260℃ (±5℃). The heating time depends on the pipe diameter (e.g., 5 seconds for 20mm pipes).

Cut pipes cleanly with a sharp tool-no rough edges. After heating, insert the pipe quickly without twisting, hold it steady for 5 seconds, then release.

A good joint should bulge evenly with a consistent color. Avoid burn marks or shrinkage.

Secure and Protect

Use clips to fix pipes: no more than 60cm apart for cold water, 25cm for hot water. Add clips within 10cm of bends.

Pad pipes with rubber where they pass through walls or floors to reduce noise.

Wrap hot water pipes in insulation to save gas and prevent condensation.

Ceiling or Floor?

Go for ceiling installation! It's pricier but avoids damaging neighbors' ceilings if leaks occur.

If floor installation is chosen, cut trenches deep enough (pipe diameter + 1.5cm) and wrap pipes in cement during backfilling to protect them from rocks.

Pressure Test

Always pressure-test pipes! Pump up to 0.8–1.0 MPa (8–10 kg/cm²), hold for 30 minutes, and ensure pressure drops no more than 0.05 MPa.

Block all pipe openings during testing and check joints/valves for leaks.

Don't Skimp on Materials

Choose S3.2 or S2.5 series pipes (thicker walls). Blue-striped pipes for cold water, red-striped for hot-never mix them up.

Look for certifications like "NSF" or "WRAS" and avoid recycled-material pipes that crack easily.

Supervise the Work

Ask for the worker's heat fusion certification and watch them weld pipes-no shortcuts with glue!

Don't rush to seal trenches. Test water flow first and fix any leaks or low pressure immediately.
